A sustainable source of protein that’s NOT plant-based

Insects are some of the most abundant creatures on our planet.

Insect production can take place in small spaces. The pollution generated to produce this protein is 0.6% in comparison with traditional proteins which is 60%. In addition, the food conversion (amount of food to gain one kg of weight) shows that to gain 1 kg of weight traditional meats need 5 kg of food, insects only need 1.6 kg. (FAO, 2009a). If we take the percentage of edible animals, it is easy to see once again that insects are an excellent choice.

In terms of nutritional value, insects are the champions. Cricket powder is a complete protein containing all 9 essential amino acids. It is rich in B12, Iron, Omega 3 and 6, in pre-biotic fibers and in many other highly bio-available trace elements. It contains almost 70% protein (beef only 35%), more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach and almost 20 times more vitamin B12 than beef.

There is a company in Montreal, Quebec called Eco-Protein (https://www.ecoproteine.com/).

This company offers an alternative food choice that is better for the environment.

The idea behind this business is to help improve human and animal nutrition while reducing its effects on the environment.

At present, the insects they use are crickets, beetles, and mealworms.

If you can get past the yuck factor, like I did (excuse me while I pat myself on the back), then you will be rewarded with a very tasty meal.

Not ready to swallow mealworms, beetles or crickets just yet?

Then how about some toasted & seasoned big-bottomed ants? They really tasted like salted, butter, popcorn.
